We’ve moved here!

Big Down Under!
April 28, 2009Given that we’ve got a New Zealander in the family, I kind of hoped that New Zealand Woman’s Weekly would be the first Oceanian magazine to pick up Book City Jackets but they were beaten to it by the Australians. We are featured as a “Wish List” item in the May issue of Home Beautiful!

Book cover portrait
April 11, 2009I got a great birthday present this year: a book cover portrait. It’s a pretty good likeness. Thanks Jason and Liz!

Gaining Some Momentum!
March 17, 2009It’s been a great couple of weeks for Book City Jackets due, in large part, to this post over at Design*Sponge (and, in equally large part due to my week-long vacation). No doubt you remember that I posted about an event hosted by D*S a couple weeks ago. That post focused on the event and the talent but that was not the whole story.
While at the party I met Grace Bonney, the mastermind behind Design*Sponge. We discussed her project — Design by the Book — and my project — Book City Jackets. Grace was into our concept, suggested a couple Brooklynites who might be good for our Artist Editions and asked that I keep her in the BCJ loop. And then last week (thanks to some PR work by our Art Department) Grace gave us some really generous blog love.
The D*S post was gratifying since Grace clearly “gets” what BCJ is about and it’s been exciting to see how people have reacted to the post. Happily, I can report that people (who are not my mom) are into it! Here are the blogosphere ripples:
- designworklife is psyched
- jratlee is nostalgic
- style saves the world is conflicted
- the Cushionist is intrigued
- inkfree is speechless
- paper obsessive is obsessed
- pakamera is, um, . . . .
- Ashley is “in love”!
So, as I said, it’s been pretty exciting.
And there’s more! Our new website will be up soon and will be followed by our first sets of Artist Editions. Email me or leave a comment if you’d like to be the first to know who our first group of artists will be!

Looking for Artists
March 10, 2009We are looking for artists to participate in our Artists Edition series and just posted the following to craigslist. Please forward to anyone who you think might be interested!
Brooklyn-based start-up, Book City Jackets, seeks to license work of up-and-coming artists for immediate production and release as part of a series of kraft paper book covers.
Book City Jackets are updated versions of the classic paperbag book cover and convert covered books into portable pieces of art. Currently available via amazon.com and at Brooklyn design stores, Book City Jackets is expanding its product line in the coming weeks.
Please send sample images or link to portfolio and indicate which pieces are most relevant to this project. Credit will be given to participating artists.
- Location: Brooklyn
- it’s NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
- Compensation: one-time fee

Doggie Bookshelf
February 26, 2009I stumbled upon these very charming bookshelves/stools/sculptures by NEL, a Mexican design collective, and think they’re great (even if they arguably fall into the category of things that are one thing but look like something else). They define playful, have some actual utility and are not insanely expensive — that’s a pretty unbeatable combination. They’re available at proteak.com for not that much.

I’m significantly less into these bookshelves by NEL, mostly because they seem totally unuseful and likely to fall over — a pretty terrible combination.

Book City Jackets went to Fashion Week
February 19, 2009Book City Jackets went to Fashion Week as part of the gift bag given out at Thuy’s runway show on Sunday. Here are some of my favorites (photos by Getty Images) :

Buttoned up, but with a twist (and slit).

Shimmery jodphurs?! Bold.

Striking but appropriate for any and every occasion, I think.

Thuy always has good pockets

My favorite dress - can't put my finger on exactly why, however.
Many thanks to Thuy and her team for the opportunity.

Bookshelves that Blow Minds
February 18, 2009I happened upon a blog called Bookshelf, which bills itself as the “home of interesting bookshelves, bookcases and things that look like them”, and was pretty blown away by the varietyof bookshelves that the world produces and that they manage to track down every week. Here are a few bookshelves that caught my eye.

Schollhammer

Skylla
Things that are one thing but look something else usually bother me but I’ll let this one slide since there’s a strong connection between what this object looks like (a book) and what it is (a bookshelf).

Not only does this website have lots of photos to drool over, but it’s the “satellite site to Shedworking the lifestyle guide for shedworkers and those who work in shedlike atmospheres.” Who knew?!
